“The Norfolk landscape where I live is a significant inspiration for me. My aim is to capture the quality of light, a sense of place and time whilst emphasising the characteristics of the paint and materials used.”

Emma Hedgecoe

Emma currently lives and works from her studio in North Norfolk, where she teaches in local art groups. Her paintings and commissions are in public and private collections in the UK.

She received her Bachelor of Art in fine art from the Norfolk Institute of Art and Design and went on to study at the Royal Academy Schools, London gaining a Postgraduate Diploma in painting, she also won scholarships from the Leverhulme Trust and RTZ and the Celia Walker prize for art.

Emma remained in London, working from her studio in Battersea, in particular producing murals for both private and commercial clients including St. Paul’s School, London.

Since her return to Norfolk, Emma has created paintings which reflect the distinctive local landscape. She cites other landscape artists as inspirational, Peter Lanyon and David Hockney whose work explores and records their fascination with their local environment and in particular, Edward Hopper whose images of vast landscapes interrupted by buildings and roads echo aspects of Emma’s work. There are elements of realism in her paintings, architectural manmade structures and natural landmarks juxtaposed against vast skies.

The luminous quality in Emma’s paintings create a sense of mystery and serenity emphasised by her use of oil paint on a gesso ground, with its velvet reflective surface and her use of subtle colours, soft misty hues and delicate brush marks which convey her initial response to the Norfolk landscape, capturing a sense of place and time.
